Created on the initiative of the outstanding Polish opera singer Tomasz Konieczny, the Baltic Opera Festival will be held every year, in the second half of July at the Forest Opera in Sopot, Shakespeare Theatre in Gdansk and other venues in the Tri-City area. Its ambitious agenda includes presentations of new opera and operetta productions, and the idea itself refers to the pre-war tradition of Opera Festivals, thanks to which Sopot was known as Bayreuth of the North in the first half of the 20th century.
Beautifully renovated and very presentable, capable to accommodate 5047 spectators, and at the same time having excellent acoustic conditions, the Forest Opera was designed in 1909 especially for the purpose of exhibiting stage works outdoors. Use of the facility in accordance with its original destiny refers to history and creates it anew. During the Festival week, mainly at the Forest Opera, but also in other open air locations in the Tri-City area, spaces will be created to develop international cooperation through exhibiting works of Polish and foreign artists. Audience is the center of the Festival’s attention, and it is for the viewers that the organisers are building their artistic proposal with the participation of the most outstanding soloists, conductors and ensembles from Poland and the whole world. The 1st Baltic Opera Festival is scheduled for the summer of 2022.
